Geography

Intent

We provide a high quality geography curriculum at Stanley Park Junior School. It is designed to both inspire and fascinate our children about the world and the people who inhabit it. We ensure that a comprehensive understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes provides a good foundation for further learning. We want our children to develop a sound knowledge of location, as well as an understanding of people, resources, natural and human environments, the area they live in as well as the more diverse areas of the world.

Implementation

We are passionate about geography at Stanley Park Junior. In order to foster children’s curiosity about the world, we teach the subject explicitly in a two-hour block every other half term. We encourage children to explore and ask questions as well as research the place being studied.  Lesson content and tasks are designed to provide appropriate challenge to all learners, in line with our commitment to inclusion. We ensure our children develop their geographical skills through a variety of means: maps, globes and aerial photographs that enable them to understand their position in Europe and the world beyond. Our children are given opportunities to collect, analyse and interpret their own data gathered from field trips and educational visits, thereby fostering a love of the natural world and a desire to protect it for future generations. The school grounds and the local area are also used for fieldwork to enable children to base learning on first hand experiences as well as develop ‘a sense of place’. The Earth’s natural resources are discussed and the children are motivated to take responsibility for their actions and how they can affect our planet.

Impact

Children will have developed the key geographical skills and knowledge, along with a love of the subject, to enable them to explore, navigate and understand the world around them and their role in it. The knowledge and skills that the children acquire will develop progressively through their time at Stanley Park Junior School, so that they not only meet the requirements of the National Curriculum, but so that they are also enthused and knowledgeable geographers prepared for secondary education.
