We are very proud of our children’s achievements in mathematics at Stanley Park Juniors! As a school, we understand and value the importance of mathematics and our staff work hard to ensure that each and every child completes a wonderful mathematical journey leaving with a with a sense of pride in their achievement.

By the time the children leave Stanley Park Junior School, we aim for them to think and feel the following:

Our Mathematics curriculum is guided by the programmes of study in the 2014 National Curriculum which has three key aims:

  • Children should become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics;
  • Children should reason mathematically;
  • Children can solve problems by applying their mathematics.

We aim to develop children’s fluency through constant reinforcement of the four operations, times tables, place value and basic number facts in a stimulating and practical environment. Children are expected to reason and justify their understanding of mathematics through the use of careful questioning, structured discussions, learning through misconception and a variety of recording methods which include physical resources and activities. Children’s learning experience of mathematics at Stanley Park Junior School is embedded in a problem solving approach coupled with the understanding that practice makes perfect!

We promote learning across the ten strands of the 2014 curriculum:

  • Number and place value;
  • Addition and subtraction;
  • Multiplication and division;
  • Fractions (including decimals and percentages);
  • Ratio and proportion;
  • Measurement;
  • Geometry – position and direction;
  • Geometry – properties of shape;
  • Statistics;
  • Algebra (Year 6 only)

To ensure that we meet the needs of all learners, mathematics is structured throughout the school so that children are given time to master the key skills of mathematics – fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Some children are extended further through work in classes whereby their mathematical understanding and deeper thinking skills are challenged at pace whilst other children concentrate more on ensuring that they have a firm foundation and understanding. Every child is sensitively placed to ensure that they maximise their progress in mathematical development and this selection is fluid and continually reviewed.

We celebrate our achievements at Stanley Park Junior School and each year we have many children who participate in the Primary Maths Challenge and the UK Maths Challenge. Lots of the children gain a Gold, Silver or Bronze medal!

Each year, we offer Family Maths Evenings or workshops in which parents are invited into school to enjoy fun activities and learn about different aspects of the teaching of maths at our school.
